Syd Learns Drums with Keagan

Updated: Jun 30, 2022

Hi everyone! My name is Syd, and I’m the Front End Manager here at the Kitchener Academy of Music. Even though I work at a music school, I’ve actually never taken music lessons before- can you believe that? So I figured now is as good a time as any to get started! Join me as I take music lessons with some of our amazing teachers. So far I’ve taken Violin, Guitar, and Vocal lessons! You can read all about them HERE!

Today, I had my very first drums lesson with Keagan! Although I’ve never played the drums before, I always thought they looked so fun to learn (and it turns out I was right!). Keagan started off our lesson by walking me through all of the different parts of our drum kit. It turns out that each drum has a different name and a different purpose, which I never really thought about! We have a bass drum, a snare drum, and some toms (two mounted toms, and one floor tom). We also have 3 different types of cymbals; one called the high hat, one crash cymbal, and one ride cymbal.

After that, Keagan moved on to showing me the proper way to hold a drumstick; it turns out this is a lot more intentional than I thought! I also learned how to use the pedals to control the bass drum and the high hat cymbal. You’re really using your whole body when you’re drumming, from your arms all the way down to your feet! After we’d gone through all of that, Keagan had me play some simple rhythms on the drum kit using the snare drum, bass drum, and the high hat cymbal. That wrapped up my first drums lesson! I learned so much about the drums in my first lesson, and I can’t wait to learn even more in my next drums lesson with Ryan.
