Hi everyone! My name is Syd, and I’m the Front End Manager here at the Kitchener Academy of Music. Even though I work at a music school, I’ve actually never taken music lessons before- can you believe that? So I figured now is as good a time as any to get started! Today I was SO excited to take my second violin lesson! I took a lesson a while back with Lauren, and I was excited to have my lesson this time around with Janine so that I could build on what I had already learned. We started off by reviewing how to hold the bow and the violin properly, which is super important when you’re learning the violin! Then we moved on to what I had learned in my lesson with Lauren, which was playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. In my first violin lesson, we’d focused on the first part of the song, and Janine built on that until I was able to play the whole thing!
Once I figured out all of my notes, Janine accompanied me on the piano so that we were able to play the song together; me on the violin, and her on the piano. That was super cool! It was great to hear both instruments really coming together.
Finally, we talked about some bowing variations, which are different patterns of ‘down bows’ and ‘up bows’ at varying speeds. Down bows and up bows are what it’s called when you’re moving the bow down or up across the strings of the violin. By using different bowing variations, you can really change the way the song sounds- kind of like strumming patterns with the guitar!
