Syd Learns Vocal with Beatrix

Updated: Jun 30, 2022

Hi everyone! My name is Syd, and I’m the Front End Manager here at the Kitchener Academy of Music. Even though I work at a music school, I’ve actually never taken music lessons before- can you believe that? So I figured now is as good a time as any to get started! Join me as I take music lessons with some of our amazing teachers. So far I’ve taken a Violin lesson with Lauren, and a Guitar lesson with Andrew. You can read all about them HERE!

Today, I took my very first vocal lesson with Beatrix! I was really nervous about this because I’ve never really sang before, and I never considered myself to be a great singer! Having said that, I was also very excited to learn about ways to improve my singing skills. Beatrix and I started off with some vocal warm-ups. These were a great way to start the lesson, and a good way for me to start finding my vocal range.

I learned that there are so many factors that impact the way you sing; one of the big ones is your posture. The way you stand, and the position that your head is in can really change the way your voice sounds, and having proper posture makes it a lot easier to sing! That’s because your vocal resonators are impacted when your body is in certain positions, and they help you get a clearer singing voice. You also need to be sure not to be too tense, or too relaxed. There’s a bit of a middle ground that you need to find, and that was one of the things that we worked on!

We also spent some time working on breathing exercises. I know this sounds so simple, but it’s important to breathe while you’re singing, and that’s something I found myself forgetting to do! Then, we put everything together and started singing a song! Beatrix wanted me to pick a song that I knew the words to so that I could focus more on the things we had learned instead of trying to remember the lyrics, so I picked “Let it Be” by the Beatles. I have to say, I definitely noticed a difference in my singing before the lesson and after!
