Hi everyone! My name is Syd, and I’m the Front End Manager here at the Kitchener Academy of Music. Even though I work at a music school, I’ve actually never taken music lessons before- can you believe that? So I figured now is as good a time as any to get started! Join me as I take music lessons with some of our amazing teachers.
My very first music lesson was a violin lesson, which I was very excited about! I always wanted to learn how to play the violin when I was younger. Lauren is one of our fantastic violin teachers, and I was so excited to be taking a lesson with her!
First off, Lauren taught me about the different parts of the violin and the bow. Did you know that there’s a part of the bow called the frog? I certainly didn’t, but I think that’s such a fun name! After I learned about all the different parts, we moved on to step 2: learning how to actually hold the violin and the bow. This was a lot more complex than I thought it would be! But once Lauren showed me the right way to hold them, I started to get the hang of things.
Now it was time for me to actually start playing the violin! Well, sort of. Lauren showed me the proper way to use the bow in order to actually begin to play. This is called ‘bowing’! After a couple of minutes of practice, I was ready to start learning some notes! Lauren marked out some spots on the violin where my fingers would need to go in order to play the notes, and within minutes I was playing ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’. Considering I’d never taken a music lesson before, let alone a violin lesson, I would consider that to be a big success!
